Is It Hot Enough For You?

OMG - IT'S SO HOT! I never went over to the Barbisol PGA event even though it's in our backyard. I just watched from our air conditioned home. And I read. And I stitched a bit. I'm making my way through this Farmer's Daughter block - almost done!! This week, for sure, I'll be cutting the setting triangles.

I forgot to tell you something yesterday about The Aurora Teagarden mysteries: these books have been made into movies starring Cameron Candice Bure (remember DJ from Full House?) on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries channel. You know I love a sappy Hallmark movie on occasion...

I saw this image of a pot yesterday and saved it - it might be inspiration for a quilt. What do you think?

Today I'm planning to work on Gardenvale. I really want to get another row done. I want to get some of the quilts in progress DONE!

Ready. Set. GO SEW!

Sunday, July 23, 2017

So...I didn't sew yesterday. So let's talk books.

My daughter got me started on this series - The Aurora Teagarden Mystery series. Real Murders is the first one to read.

These are cozies - light and non-gory murders - well, okay...there's a bit of gory description, but the stories don't focus on that. The main character is Aurora Teagarden, who goes by 'Roe.' She's a small town librarian and is almost 30 years old and single. Roe is a very likable character and I would love to be her friend!

These books are read very quickly and easily. I really love them! I'm reading one of them at the moment (the second in the series) on my Kindle while I listen to a much deeper, heavier book via Audible. This is working so well for me. I listened to the 'deep' book yesterday while I drove to the grocery store and back home again.

Speaking of which, note to self: avoid going to TJ Maxx and the grocery store during a tax free weekend. Crowded!

Have a relaxing day!

Off Kilter

I finished one little section for the next Bring Me Flowers block. The center is a bit off - this will be covered with a small appliqué circle - thank goodness!

And I made a great start on this Farmer's Daughter block.

I'm a bit off kilter myself today. A family friend passed away yesterday after being involved in a serious bicycle accident a few months ago. A sad situation. Wishing his family peace.

Sewing! And Pat Sloan...

I finally got something done, sewing-wise, yesterday. I decided to sew the Marmalade rows together - yes, it's one BRIGHT quilt! I still have to add the borders, but I'm a bit disappointed in how small it is at this point. And it's square. I really prefer rectangular quilts. Hmmm....

I may dig out some of my Kaffe Fassett stash and see if I can add some top and bottom borders BEFORE I do the border around the outside. Or maybe I'll put the borders on and then add another border to the top and bottom. This will take some doing and thinking and playing. We'll see where it takes me.

Next I basted the next Rowdy Flat Library Quilt block (ready for hand quilting!) - no picture, but I promise it did it.

Last night was our guild meeting with Pat Sloan. I LOVED all her quilts.

She was entertaining (though she made fun of engineers, of which I am one- but I forgive her) and I enjoyed her presentation.

We had a big crowd for the meeting. Pat is teaching here in town tomorrow and Saturday. I'm not taking her classes, but many of my friends are. I can't wait to see what they make. The classes are more techniques instead of a specific pattern - using lots of scraps.

Today, today.... I think I'll hand sew. I've cut out another Bring Me Flowers block and the LAST I'm a Farmer's Daughter block.

Did I do any hand sewing at the lake? Nope. Not one little stitch. A couple of days off...really off.

I did swim with Cooper. He loves to swim with me. Or by himself. He just love to swim, period!

And I read a bit.

But that's it.

We are back home will sew SOMETHING! I'm not sure yet what I'll sew, but I WILL SEW!

Pat Sloan is here in Auburn, sponsored by our guild and our local quilt shop. She'll be speaking at guild tonight - should be a good meeting!

Make it a great day!

I worked SO hard on Marmalade yesterday. In fact I finished all the little units! And then I sewed units into rows. The rows are pressed and ready to sew together, but I'll save that for later. We decided to come to the lake later yesterday afternoon and I forgot to take pictures of Marmalade before I left - use your imagination!

Above was shot I took just as I arrived - a storm rolling in.

And then we had white caps and lots of thunder.

And next we had a gorgeous sunset. The storm never arrived, just complained very loudly all around us for a few hours.

Of course I brought a bag of hand stitching with me. We'll only be here until tomorrow. Grilling out hot dogs today - yum! Hubby was able to get the grass mowed yesterday - I have some household chores this morning. My job is to go outside and tackle the cobwebs which have come back in full force since we were here just a couple of weeks ago and I took care of this same chore.

Enjoy your day!

More Hand Stitching...Bring Me Flowers

Another Bring Me Flowers block complete - except for the flower centers. I have cut them out...

I've made six blocks so far. Yesterday I made the templates for the next two blocks - hope to cut out the fabric pieces later today.

And yesterday I bit the bullet and prepared the pieces for another Farmer's Daughter block. Another block made from Gardenvale scraps.

I got a few questions about why I'm making another block. It looks like enough in this picture?

IF I sew them together like this, I'll need HUGE corner pieces in the 4 corners - much bigger than the setting triangles needed along the sides. Do you see how the bottom and top rows have 2 blocks? Well, I need the bottom and top rows need to have 3 blocks, making those 4 corners pieces smaller. And if I make one more block that will work without sacrificing the size of the quilt. Hope that makes sense.

I'm glad to hear that many of you have 2 books going at the same time. So far it's working great for me!

What are you working on today? I've decided to make it a marathon Marmalade day! Let's see how far I get!

This is a BIG week in our neighborhood - The Barbisol PGA golf championship is being held here. Very exciting! We have to have parking placards in our cars to get to our house. Hubby is volunteering once the tournament starts on Thursday, but the golfers, caddies, and families are already here, getting ready for the practice round. Note to self: stay away from the pool - it will be CROWDED!

Hope you have a fab day!!!!

Need. One. More. Block. Ugh!

Yesterday morning I laid out all the Farmer's Daughter's blocks. And guess what? I need one more. Don't you hate that feeling when you think you are done and you aren't? I didn't have the heart or gumption to cut another block yesterday - maybe today? If it's worth's worth doing right!

Some of my fabric choices weren't the greatest - a few areas look like mush from a distance. But it is wonderfully scrappy and I do like that. And every single stitch is by hand. (Though I'll probably sew the blocks together via machine...)

I decided to work on sewing more quilted dresden blocks together - I now have two rows complete. Three rows to go - and many of these other blocks are already quilted.

We spent another late afternoon at the pool - even swam some laps before relaxing to read. That handsome guy in the pool is Hubby. I'm doing something new - I'm reading one book on my Kindle and listening to another book via Audible. Okay, not at the exact same moment - but I'll have two books going at once. They are totally different thank goodness. Do you read one book at a time? Or do you have multiple in progress?

It's raining here today - nice and relaxing. Hopefully it's cooling things off a bit.

Have a sweet Sunday.

My Humps, My Humps, My Lovely, Lovely Humps...

I decided to work on this last full block for Farmer's Daughter yesterday. All was going well until...oops! I have two big humps! I'm glad I realized it before I got too far with this. I'd turned something the wrong happens! Though I've made so many of these blocks that you'd think I'd have it down pat by now.

No worries - a bit of 'unsewing' and I fixed it. Boom! Done! Very ORANGE! I hope to cut the setting triangles over the weekend and get to work on them.

Not much else going on with me. Another quiet weekend ahead with a bit of golf (Hubby) and a bit of sewing (me, of course!) The doggies don't like the heat any more than we do - they are enjoying lazy days of sleep underneath a ceiling fan and only go out when necessary. I'm so glad quilting is an indoor sport!

Enjoy your day!

This and That and a Cake

It was one of those days - a bit of this and a touch of that. I finished the borders on that secret challenge project. And then I made a couple of more of these Marmalade units.

And yes, I made a cake! I never had cake on my birthday - too full after dinner. So I made this banana blueberry pound cake - recipe HERE! I've made this recipe a few times - always delicious!

And what to do today? I have a book that I'm determined to finish- just a few pages left. One of my birthday presents was a gift card to Audible - so I plan to set that up today so I can listen away to books. And I may make it a hand sewing day. I think I need one!

Hubby is headed to the golf course this morning for the first time in over a week. It's just been too hot. So off he goes and the dogs and I will stay inside.

It's your choice- so make it a wonderful day! And smile - it's contagious!

Still Working on Secret Project...

More of this challenge project yesterday. I wanted to work on it before I forgot what I had planned - I knew if I put it aside for another few months that I'd forget what I wanted to do. This is the completed back side. The front now only needs to more 2 border pieces stitched on and it will be ready to be trimmed and bound. Though I just might add a bit more quilting to it. And it will need a sleeve. This will finish at 24" square. Yes, the front side has LOTS more pieces than the back!

The challenge? We had to draw a fat quarter from a large bag - no peeking! Then we had to make a quilt from the fat quarter and any black and white fabric. The only color in the quilt is from our drawn fat quarter. No other fabrics should be in the quilt other than black and white. We must use most of our fat quarter. The quilt should measure at least 24" square, but no more than 48" I think.

I used almost ALL my fat quarter - wished I had more, but that's part of the challenge, right?

Tomorrow maybe I'll have something more interesting to share, but I'll be glad to have this one complete WAY ahead of schedule.

I hope to do some hand stitching today - I want to finish the last Farmer's Daughter block and get on with the triangles to go along the edges. And I wouldn't mind basting the 2nd Rowdy Flat Library Quilt block so I can begin the hand quilting on it. I'll just see where the day takes me!

Have a great one!

Working on a Challenge

Yesterday I pulled out a project I started several months ago. I think I may have shown it here before, but I'm not showing it again until December. You see, it's for a challenge in my quilt guild. Many of my guild friends read my blog, so I think I'll keep in under wraps until after the challenge. Above I was zigzagging some batting scraps together for this small project.

And here is the back side of the small quilt. It's a quilt-as-you-go process. I decided to make the back side with a few different fabrics, too (more to go...) Anyway, I got a good bit done and think I'll have it finished in the near future.

In the afternoon...we headed for the pool. In the adult only pool there are built in tables within the pool. So there we sat, IN the pool, having a nice drink and reading a book and chatting. Ahhh....

And then we walked a few steps to the Splash Bar for dinner. I love the brisket burger and sweet potato fries. Hubby had a pasta dish.  Another ahhh....

And we finished the day with a lovely sunset. Another ahhh... what a nice birthday!

Do you buy anything on Amazon Prime Day? I grabbed a great deal on a new set of wireless headphones to replace the set I dropped in the pool. They'll come tomorrow. And then last night I found a really cute dress and got that, too. Hope it fits...

I'm headed to the sewing room this morning. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Back to Machine Quilting

I had the nicest day yesterday! I machine quilted my little heart out - I finished 3 blocks and also one of the half blocks. I did some counting - I only have 6 full blocks and a few half blocks left to quilt! I have a feeling I might machine quilt another morning this week...this one is getting close...

In the afternoon, Hubby and I went to the pool. We sat in the shade and read, and then got in the water when we got hot. We met the nicest couple from Fairhope - we seemed to hit it off and stayed longer than we'd planned.  (During which time I managed to FaceTime Daughter 1 both on her regular and work cell phones, and accidentally call my mother. OOPS!) Then it was back home to grill out. What a lovely day!

And my birthday! We don't have big plans...just a simple day. I plan to sew (as usual!) and we'll go out to eat tonight. My pick of restaurant? I want to go to the Splash Bar at the Marriott in our neighborhood. I love the food there and we can go on the golf cart. Now I need to decide if I want to make a cake for the two of us to eat over several days...or just order a dessert with dinner and save LOTS of calories. Hmmm....

Gotta run- Hubby's bringing home a special breakfast for me!

Have a terrific Tuesday!

MORE...Hand Stitching!

Well...I never made it to my machine yesterday. But I did finish this Rowdy Flat Library Quilt block. No bird, no butterfly, no bee - just one snail and a caterpillar.

And I also started another Farmer's Daughter block. Yes, another VERY ORANGE one to help balance things out. Did you know that I think this is my last block for this quilt?! The pattern calls for 25 blocks to make it a square quilt, but I want mine to be a rectangle. And I do believe this one will finish it off.

The blocks will be set on point, so I do have to make the setting triangles. Each one has an eight pointed star (a smaller version of the center of the main block) in it.

And here's my big boy. Can you see the drool coming out of both sides of his mouth? Yes, if we are eating, he is drooling. Drip, drip. Despite his destructive puppyhood, we think he is one of the best dogs we've ever had. And we've had a lot of dogs over the years.

Have a marvelous Monday!

Rowdy Flat Day

Yesterday I worked on the Rowdy Flat Library Quilt. I cut out all the remaining pieces of fabric and have them pinned in place.

The only place I could find to put the snail was at the bottom of the circle, upside down.

And I fit a caterpillar at the base of those cherries. This block is almost done!

If I do any machine sewing today, I think I'll work on those dresden plates - maybe machine quilt a few.

We watched a couple of redbox movies this week - both very good: Passengers and A Dog's Purpose. And on Netflix/Amazon we've started Mr. Robot (a bit odd and confusing, but good) and Grantchester (a vicar solves murders).  All this TV means LOTS of hand sewing for me!

This morning the TV is parked on the Tour de France - Hubby loves it!

Enjoy your day!

Saturday, July 8, 2017

Yesterday I did some machine piecing, putting my strip sets to work to make bigger units for my Marmalade quilt. The units to the right are complete - I've made all 12 of them. I need to make more of the bigger sized units, and there are other various sized units to make, too. This is a fun project - love the bright colors!

I was in the mood to cook. I made a zucchini and brown rice casserole, cole slaw, and a sour cream blueberry pie to go with our grilled chicken last night. (Don't worry - the pie was low on sugar and I substituted nonfat plain Greek yogurt for the sour cream - not to many calories!)

Today I think I'll make it a hand stitching day.  And we're going out to dinner with friends, so no cooking today.

Wishing you a happy Saturday!

Bring Me Flowers

Yesterday I focused on Bring Me Flowers. I need to make the flower pot that goes with these, along with the stems. And I need to appliqué a small circle in the center of each.

And what is this??? My old guitar. When I was young (Elementary School, I think) I took classical guitar lessons from a lovely woman who had immigrated from Cuba with her family. My brother and a friend also took from her. My brother stuck with it and even now still plays and takes an occasional lesson. I moved on to the flute and band. I wasn't a bad flute player! But for the past few years my guitar has been calling me. It's been over 40 years - but I miss it.

I've held on to the guitar all these years and it made the cut to come to our small house last year. Yesterday I took it for new strings. And so, it's ready to go. I'm going to buy some easy music and see if I can pick it up and start playing again.

Hoper you have a great day!

Applique and Hand Piecing and Worm Jerky

I'm happy to say that I WILL have room to add some bugs and things to this block. Yay! This block is getting close to being finished!

And I finished another Farmer's Daughter block last night. Lots of progress!

Last night Cooper's long walk didn't happen until 6:45 pm when it finally began to cool down a bit. The extreme heat brings about the death of many earthworms in the area - they come to surface and end up frying on a sidewalk or road. And then we are left with scattered and dried up worm 'jerky' - all over the place. Cooper loves worm jerky. I know - yuck, right? By the time we return from our walk, he has had quiet the snack.

I'm not sure what I'll stitch on today, but I do know I will stitch on something. Hubby's is not playing golf - simply TOO HOT - so I may stick to hand stitching while we watch a movie.

Have a nice day...and stay CooL!

Strip Sets!

I got my sewing mojo going early yesterday! I worked on strips sets for Marmalade - this is an easy and fun quilt pattern. I actually got ALL the strips sets sewn and pressed, cut them all up into subunits, and even began to stitch the subunits together.

Yesterday I spotted a HUGE butterfly on one of our two butterfly bushes. We've planted a butterfly bush at almost every house we've owned, but this is the first time we've really had success. They are growing and blooming like crazy!

We are officially in the HOT part of summer here in Alabama. I read an article a couple of days ago that listed the states in order of how miserable their summers are. Alabama is Number 4 most miserable. I'd have to agree! HOT and sticky. At the bottom of the list - the more pleasant summers - were Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington state.  After living in Alabama my entire life, you'd think I'd be used to it by now?  Hubby is much more acclimated than I am because he is outside much more. Now that the July 4th holiday is behind us, I think I might be heading to the pool more - it was very crowded over the weekend.

So what's up for today? I'm thinking it might be a handwork day... maybe a little appliqué (RFLQ) and maybe a bit of hand piecing (Farmer's Daughter and Bring Me Flowers). Sounds like a plan!

Have a great one!

No Sewing...BUT, Still a Great Day! AND Happy July 4th!

I was drinking my coffee, still in my pajamas (hadn't EVEN had breakfast!) when I looked out the window and my plans for sewing WENT OUT THE WINDOW! The guy in the brown uniform was outside with two HUGE boxes!

Hubby was playing golf. I should wait for him, right? NO, I couldn't wait. I opened the boxes, got dressed, ate breakfast and started on construction. Times TWO.

I put them together all by myself and even moved them into place. And I love them! They are not fully styled yet...give me some time, and I'll get there. I want to find some PRETTY lidded boxes or baskets to store current works-in-progress. No more visible plastic bins. Forgive me for wanting my sewing room, where I spend so much time, to be pretty. It's visible as soon as you come in our front door. I still want to hang curtain panels - maybe I'll make them? And yes, my desk needs cleaning off. It's a work in progress in itself, though I'm SO glad I ordered these shelves.

Yesterday Hubby and I ran some errands and then had some porch time with the dogs.

Today we'll be grilling out hamburgers and hotdogs, and in general...chilling. For those interested in the cookbook I mentioned yesterday, you can find Cotton Country Cooking HERE. It's been my favorite cookbook for 40 years!

Happy July 4th to you!
