Lovely Hexie Flowers

This is the work of Kathy Kirby.  About it she said,

"My first hexi project. Top completed while visiting my kids in Hawaii. Now I have to try to figure out how to complete it. I do plan to hand quilt it, but unsure of the batting? or not? Last thing for me will be the tea dying...to vintage it... I love the prim look. I started this in '09 while my father was dying."

When I make a quilt, I find that whatever is going on in my life at the time becomes imbedded in the fabric layers.  I might remember the time of year when I made it, or maybe that someone was sick.  And yes, I have a quilt in progress that I also worked on beside my Dad's bed the day before he died.  Kathy is the same way!  This quilt will hold both good and sad memories for her, I'm sure.

Thanks for sharing, Kathy!

Almost Antique Hexies

One of my friends brought this beauty to our small sewing group earlier this week.  It was made by someone in her family, though she's not sure exactly who that was.  More research needed...

I appears to have been appliquéd onto this blue floral background.  The same blue in the backing of the quilt.  From the fabrics, we're guessing it was made in the '40's, but we're not fabric experts.  Any ideas of it's age?

And look - they were definitely fussy cutting back then!

Each corner was done the same way.  It's interesting that the white hexies at the bottom/top extend further than the others.  Lovely quilt!

Toni Stone sent me these photos of hexies at the Mountain Quiltfest in Pigeon Forge, TN last weekend.  Thanks, Toni!  Aren't they beautiful?!

Two Hour Baby Quilt

Another hexie quilt from Victoria at Bumblebeans!  She cut the hexie shapes with her Accuquilt Go!  And she made the ENTIRE quilt in only TWO HOURS!  Piecing, quilting, and binding - two hours!  I think she is secretly Wonder Woman....

Read how she did it here.

Hexie Mug Rugs!

Here's a fun little project I'm working on (in between all my bigger projects).  Isn't this the cutest little mug rug?  With all the hexie projects I have around here, I happen to have piles of unused hexies scattered about.  I thought this would be a great use for them.

I'm stitching felt to the back side (no quilting needed!) - easy peasy and done!

I plan to make bunches of these for gifties for special people!

Hexie Dragon!

I have been watching the progress of this quilt recently...WOW, is all I can say!  Gail, from
I Think Sew made this amazing hexie quilt.  Here's what she had to say about it:

Hi!
I've been watching your blog for a while now and am super excited to share something with you... I recently finished a big hexie quilt project... my Dragon Hexie Quilt.  I started it in Oct 11 and just finished this month Feb 2013!  There are 4,132 1/2" hexies making the total size of the quilt 72" wide by 54" tall.  I free-motion-quilted the horizontal lines and woodgrain pattern in the background, and used french knots to quilt the actual dragon.   I made it in the Chinese year of the Dragon for my husband who is a wood dragon in their astrology.
Anyway, felt like sharing!

Did you catch that???? 4,132 hexies? And only 1/2 inch???

Thanks so much for sharing, Gail!  Absolutely fabulous work!!!!!

Do you have a hexie project to share? Let me know!
